Bad Habitat Portland Hip Hop Bio

Bad Habitat is the hiphop equivalent of The Three Musketeers, with the swagger of a young Rat Pack, and a style all their own. They consist of two emcees (Flawless and Dru-Manchu of the northwest mega-collab The Surrealest) and one dj (DJ Cuttah of Trifekta notoriety), with a little assist from long time local staple and well respected emcee/battle rapper Damian Grey (aka Trafek of Trash Heap) from the Northwest region of The United States of America located on the planet Earth in the Milky Way Galaxy in the positive matter universe (just in case you’re lost…)

In it’s short time as a group Bad Habitat has had the opportunity to share the stage with an impressive list of indie and mainstream hiphop acts including Slick Rick The Ruler, The Beatnuts, Rahzel, Canibus, Abstract Rude, Noah 23, Digital Underground, members of Oldominion including Sleep and Josh Martinez (The Chicharones), Pale Soul, and Grayskul (of Rhymesayers Entertainment), My-G, members of Living Legends, Braille, Cool Nutz, and members of Sandpeople, (amongst many others…) With at least 3+ years of experience behind each member (over a decade in Damian’s case…), Bad Habitat is steady holding it down for Northwest hiphop. The group stands poised to make a major impact as they quickly grow into a significant force to be reckoned with, stealing shows and new fans at every venue they appear. Evolving into a close knit family unit from a loose trio of like-minded artists, Bad Habitat formed early in the summer of 2008, with Damian Grey joining a few months after.

Bad Habitat’s live show has garnered much acclaim from local promoters, perfomers, and fans alike, and has been described as one of the best kept secrets of the Northwest hiphop scene. But you don’t have to take my word for it… check them out live for yourself! Upcoming shows are updated frequently. Bad Habitat can be found on stage multiple times in any given month, often performing almost weekly. These hungry and driven artists have even gone as far as rocking 2 shows at different locations in a single night! We stay busy!

In addition to an endless onslaught of upcoming shows, be on the watch for the debut mixtape, “Swaggadocious”, coming soon, and the official album, “Scissor Tree” shortly after.

For booking or collaboration information contact Bad Habitat at badhabitat@gmail.com, or send us a myspace message. Seriously. Messages are checked frequently. We gets down like that.

Oregon Music News: Bad Habitat Review

IAME gets all hands up at the Calabash

by Daniel M Landolt-Hoene on December 2, 2009

IAME showWhen I got to the Calabash the house was already packed and in party mode. Big Daddy XL from the Fabulous Saturdays crew was hosting and made it known why we were all there: Flawless from Bad Habitat was celebrating his birthday and IAME was in the house. Local rappers, friends and people who just came out for dope jams filled the room.

Matriarx opened the night, two ladies who trade rhymes and sing soul harmonies. They don’t shy away from the label “conscious rap” and deliver straightforward positivity between sweetly sung choruses. It was a welcome event to see female emcees on the typically male dominated stage of a rap show. Though they just recently got together, their voices are strong and left me interested to know where they are headed.

Daps of Nightcrawlers brought out his new solo set that rips through stories of personal struggle, growth and world madness with a street perspective. Diction came out and swaggered through essay-like songs about politics and independent action. Jimmy Fontaine of Fabulous Saturdays kicked funny, braggadocious rhymes to drink along with, and Tru Game finally got the ladies dancing, with four guys on stage, trading smooth rhymes in between radio-friendly vocal melodies.

Flawless was killing it despite partying like it was his birthday. He rocked solo songs, then amped the crowd with his partners Trafek and Dru Manchu as Bad Habitat. These guys have a strong dynamic together, between harder verses and humor, and clearly they were having a great time throwing down for their crowd.

IAME took the stage and every rapper in attendance stood up to pay attention. Affiliated with both local crews Oldominion and Sandpeople, IAME is well-recognized for his standout voice. He has been grinding on stages much larger than the Calabash for long enough to immediately get in sync with a crowd – hands went up on his call and heads nodded along to the heavy beats. He rocked a mix of classic verses and songs as well as material off his new album I Am My Enemy. His style breaks it down hard but he doesn’t claim any false rep, and goes into detail about where he is from (Lake Oswego) and where his will to rap perfection has taken him. His lyrics are creative, funny, introspective and ready to party. “Heaven Metal”, a track he introduced from his new record, explains it fairly well: with 12 years of experience / and work I’ve earned my peers respect / I’m not perfect but I got the purest intent. A rappers rapper, IAME finished with a thank you and an invitation to join him on stage and freestyle, in a perfect show of support for the open platform that is Hip Hop.

The Oregonian about Bad Habitat

A hip-hop benefit that hits closer to home (Or: One more thing to do tonight)

Got room on the schedule for another fundraiser?hiphop.jpgAwwww. It's Elmo!

David Huston is a tall man with a voice made for microphones. He's taking classes at Portland State working towards degrees in business and Spanish. And he promotes some of the biggest hip-hop shows in Portland.

Huston called a couple of weeks ago to tell me about his plan to host one show a month with a charity tie-in. Shows like tonight's at Barracudas, where you can dance and help the kids. Because while we're all fixated on how terrible the situation is in Haiti, there's still need here as well.

The important info:

DJ laylow and Ozone present: "Bring a child out of the cold dance party."

Featuring: Bad Habitat, Lady w/ Matriarx and Tru Game

DJed by: DJ Mentos

Place and time: Barracudas Night Club on 2nd and Couch @ 10pm

What: A charity fundraiser benefiting Impact NW to provide the youth of Portland with support from the hip-hop community, please bring coats and toys for girls and boys.

Why: Those of us in the hip-hop community have benefited from what we do and would like to give back to our community and show a positive side of hip-hop that most don’t see, the kids are our future and if we don’t look out for them who will?

Cover: 10$ for 18-20 and 21&up is free
